Use your business plan as a road map leading to your success. Consider creating one even if you are not planning to have investors or apply for a start-up loan.

Sometimes life happens and you unexpectedly hit a rough patch. You can have stable employment in a good job and then suddenly lose it, leading to a tremendous shock. Has the idea of a home-based enterprise ever occurred to you? There are tips in this piece that can lead you in that direction.

Keep your mind focused on what is yet to come. It is important to celebrate the successes that you achieved in the past, but it is even more vital not to lose focus on the present. You need to look to the future, and what is going to happen then. Doing so will help prepare you for future opportunities and potential pitfalls. That way, you won’t be blindsided by something you weren’t looking for.

Research where potential customers are likely to be, and use several mediums to be there too. Customers exist both online and in a real market. Have a strong presence in community activities or organize an event in a strategic location.

Do not be lenient when it comes to your customers paying your for your work. While this might seem like a good idea to build relationships, it could cost you big time. It would be wise to state a clear payment term for all your invoices and documents, including late payment fees.

While conducting business in comfortable clothes may be fun at first, you may find yourself missing the professional attire required at your previous job. Take time to schedule regular meetings and errands for your business outside of your home to avoid feeling lonely.

Save all of your paperwork regarding your business for seven years. As you are running your own business, everything from transportation expenditures to supplies can be tax-deductible. You should save your receipts to recover some extra deductions at the end of the tax year. If you do not keep these items, you will have a hard time filing for taxes and following your budget.

Maintain all contracts in an easy to find place. Keep your phone and internet contracts in the same location in case you need to argue with these companies over their service.

Business Card

Business cards are a wise investment. There are many websites online that offer free or inexpensive business card printing services. On your business card, remember to include your name and contact information. At the very least, include a work phone number. Be sure to include your email or website address. Doing so makes it much more simple for clients to contact you.
