There’s so much of my life that I time mark with music. This memory was jarred by a recent post on Facebook from one my internet marketing buddies, Tom “The Furry Hat Guy” Yatar.

He posted a lyric from this tune and immediately I was mentally transported back to an afternoon in my past.

Okay, let me set the scene. I was 20, working at an oilfield supply store in my little South Texas town and this job was actually my third in three years. Due to the economy, not anything that I did, as times tightened up last hired usually meant first fired.

So there I was working for this pretty well known company when a corporate decision was made to close that store and move it to another town a couple hours away.

My boss called me into his office and told me the news, said, “Sorry, we’re moving and got to let you go”.

Well to a 20 year old me who had wasted a lot of hours working in the hot South Texas sun for these guys, that didn’t sit so well.

I walked out to my 1966 white Mustang, popped Twister Sister into the cassette deck, yes, back then it was state of the art. In fact, side note, I got 2nd place in a “Crank Off” (loud car stereo competition) that year with the same car. Anyway, kicked on that tune, loudest possible, both 10″ subwoofers booming, the rest of the 8 speakers blaring “WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT, NO…NOT GONNA TAKE IT!

Then tore out of the parking lot, tires spinning.*WINK*

I miss that car.*SMILE*

The years have added some sense of wise to some of my actions. But the heart of that 20 year old still resides in my body and still screams “WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT”, when things present themselves to interfere with myself and my family. “WE’LL FIGHT, YOU SEE”

What is it in your life that you will no longer tolerate? You’ve been pushed up against the wall, now fight back, for yourself, scream “WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE”.

This appeared recently in one of my email accounts from SalesLadder, a recruiting agency and resume service for high end, $100,000 a year plus jobs.

As account executive you have to be ever vigilant of the new tricks and tips of the sales process. You also have to be on your toes if you are being paid what you should be for your position.

When you find yourself in the position of updating your resume, you need to think of what the potential employer is looking for, or what kind of “problem” he is trying to resolve.

In the Sales process, the problem-solver is the future sales maker and has always been my approach at sales.

If you do not understand your clients needs, then you do not know how or what to sale them.

Read through this ancient resume to see how Leonardo Da Vinci attempted to resolve his potential employer’s problems and how he “Sold” himself without sounding pompous or by bragging.

The translation of this letter is quite remarkable:

“Most Illustrious Lord, Having now sufficiently considered the specimens of all those who proclaim themselves skilled contrivers of instruments of war, and that the invention and operation of the said instruments are nothing different from those in common use: I shall endeavor, without prejudice to any one else, to explain myself to your Excellency, showing your Lordship my secret, and then offering them to your best pleasure and approbation to work with effect at opportune moments on all those things which, in part, shall be briefly noted below.

1.	I have a sort of extremely light and strong bridges, adapted to be most easily carried, and with them you may pursue, and at any time flee from the enemy; and others, secure and indestructible by fire and battle, easy and convenient to lift and place. Also methods of burning and destroying those of the enemy.

2.	I know how, when a place is besieged, to take the water out of the trenches, and make endless variety of bridges, and covered ways and ladders, and other machines pertaining to such expeditions.

3.	If, by reason of the height of the banks, or the strength of the place and its position, it is impossible, when besieging a place, to avail oneself of the plan of bombardment, I have methods for destroying every rock or other fortress, even if it were founded on a rock, etc.

4.	Again, I have kinds of mortars; most convenient and easy to carry; and with these I can fling small stones almost resembling a storm; and with the smoke of these cause great terror to the enemy, to his great detriment and confusion.

5.	And if the fight should be at sea I have kinds of many machines most efficient for offense and defense; and vessels which will resist the attack of the largest guns and powder and fumes.

6.	I have means by secret and tortuous mines and ways, made without noise, to reach a designated spot, even if it were needed to pass under a trench or a river.

7.	I will make covered chariots, safe and unattackable, which, entering among the enemy with their artillery, there is no body of men so great but they would break them. And behind these, infantry could follow quite unhurt and without any hindrance.

8.	In case of need I will make big guns, mortars, and light ordnance of fine and useful forms, out of the common type.

9.	Where the operation of bombardment might fail, I would contrive catapults, mangonels, trabocchi, and other machines of marvellous efficacy and not in common use. And in short, according to the variety of cases, I can contrive various and endless means of offense and defense.

10.	In times of peace I believe I can give perfect satisfaction and to the equal of any other in architecture and the composition of buildings public and private; and in guiding water from one place to another.

11.	I can carry out sculpture in marble, bronze, or clay, and also I can do in painting whatever may be done, as well as any other, be he who he may.

Again, the bronze horse may be taken in hand, which is to be to the immortal glory and eternal honor of the prince your father of happy memory, and of the illustrious house of Sforza.

And if any of the above-named things seem to anyone to be impossible or not feasible, I am most ready to make the experiment in your park, or in whatever place may please your Excellency – to whom I comment myself with the utmost humility, etc.”

He simply stated what he could do and was more than willing to demonstrate or provide any examples that were needed.

Now that is self confidence!

I was slow to get on the Twitter band wagon. I had already spent countless hours on other social sites, myspace, youtube, skype, yuwie (pronounced YUCKIE!). Anyway, the last thing I needed was another time black hole, so no, I went kicking and screaming.

But I have to admit, I love Twitter. Where else can I jump from topic to topic, or spread an affiliate link to 6000+ followers in two clicks.

I just wish I had more than 140 characters to work with sometimes.

It does have that standing around the water cooler at work feel sometimes.

There is an art though to being a proper Twitteree.

These are some of mine.
*Tweeting is not texting..so leave that cursed shorthand to the texters.
*Typing in all caps is still “YELLING!”, and using all lower case means you’re lazy.
*Drop an occasional link, if all of you’re Tweets are affiliate links, um..it’s called SPAM.
*If all of you’re Tweets are news articles,..BORING.

Mix it up for cripes sake, the general idea is that you’re at a giant social event. So imagine someone standing in a corner sputtering Shakespeare quotes every 5 minutes. The first couple are cool, but after that I’m heading over to the bar and getting a Jack-N-Coke.

Look in the other corner and there is some guy handing his business card to anyone that looks in his direction.

Now you’re getting it. It’s okay to talk about business, but don’t come off like a firehose.

It’s a great tool to use to build your online presence. You can get a lot of “followers” fast, so give quality and you will get quality back.

Oh, I almost forgot, look me up at WhatamanJackson and feel free to give me a tweet.

Each of us has faced it at one time or another. Beginning a new project, or maybe starting a new business, possibly doing the most crucial part of your business that actually makes it a credible money-producing venture for yourself.

At the beginning, your mind can only think of how big the task is, how much needs to be done, how long the journey will be till the task is completed.

To the mind the task can be daunting, impossible to achieve.

When all that needs to happen is just starting, just get yourself going.

You know what you have to do, you know what is expected, you’ve done all the researching that you need to do. All that is left is just doing it.

What can you do, or is there really anything that you can do to make it easier. Unfortunately, probably not, you just have to get yourself in gear and get going.

There’s nothing more scarier than the demons in your own mind. No one’s going to yell at you. No one’s going to laugh at you. No one’s going to slam the door in your face or rudely hand up the phone on you. Well, that might actually happen. *smile*

But if it does, so what.

Wouldn’t you rather have that happen to you than have yourself beat yourself one more time. You’ve done that enough, haven’t you?

There is no cure for procrastination, other than not procrastinating.

Blessed by the wonders of the internet I found this awesome gem in one of my emails recently, which of course spurred the blog post;

“A road well begun is the battle half won. The important thing is to make a beginning and get under way.”

by Soren Kierkegaard (1813–1855), a Danish philosopher and writer.

Now get yourself going, truly the hardest step is the first one.

Talkin’ to myself and feelin’ old
Sometimes I’d like to quit
Nothing ever seems to fit
Hangin’ around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

What I’ve got they used to call the blues
Nothin’ is really wrong
Feelin’ like I don’t belong
Walkin’ around
Some kind of lonely clown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

Funny but it seems I always wind up here with you
Nice to know somebody loves me
Funny but it seems that it’s the only thing to do
Run and find the one who loves me.

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out
We know what it’s all about
Hangin’ around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

Now Mondays on the other hand are another thing. What Mondays mean to me are the end of my weekend. The end getting to see my boys every second and being with the beautiful blonde woman.

The day job takes that precious rest of the week that I’d rather spend with them. So come Monday morning I stomp back off and do what men are supposed to do to take care of their families. Say the yes sir’s and no ma’ams till the time clock says I get to return home to my family.

Sometimes I’d like to quit….but I don’t. It’s not really what I do, I keep going.

So unfortunately for my family, sometimes Sunday evenings, those feelings start creeping in that I didn’t spend enough time with them that weekend. Or that maybe I didn’t get to that one project that I wanted to didn’t get done.

It’s a vicious circle.

But my family does love me, can’t get enough me and it’s those moments that I do get to share with them that are the times that I truly live for.

Now go enjoy your family, I’m going to go enjoy mine.

Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude

Okay here’s the story, I was 21 and far from home, working as a assistant store manager. Due to the economy and turn down in available work, my position was phased out. That was many moons ago, but a familiar story that many are facing today.

Anyway, I was in need of finding a way to pay some bills and was introduced to door-to-door sales. Exactly, talk about trial by fire! Sink or swim, yes, you got it.

Luckily for me, I was trained by this tough-as-leather older lady that could be as sweet as honey (when she needed to) or could be tough as nails to get through to the decision-maker at a company.

Anyway, once I was left to my own devices, I needed a way to amp my own self up to get into the door. Cold Call Sales is not for the faint of heart. Without the prodding of my trainer, I found it too easy to drift off and make up reasons not to make the call or walk into a stranger’s door.

This book, “Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude” by Napoleon Hill was one of my first attempts to change my mindset.

I would sit by the side of the road and read a few passages, just enough to take the edge off, then off I would go. Read, re-read and do it all over again. It helped me in numerous ways.

One of it’s beginning thoughts, and probably the core one to the book is YOU are the most important living person. Your success, your health, wealth and happiness depends on you use that knowledge.

Realizing that helped me become a little more teflon when I went through that door.

ac·count·abil·i·ty : the quality or state of being accountable; especially : an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions

I recently had to confront someone about some actions that they had taken. And I was in complete awe to the point that I had to shake my head of their inability to see how their actions had resulted in additional costs to the company and additional work hours to other staff. I was dumbfounded.

The trouble that I was having that this person was of an equal age. Had this person been younger, then the fatherly mentor part of myself could have stepped forward and tended to the task at hand. But that was not the situation. So the mistake on my part was to come at the situation that this person had the same life’s knowledge that I had.

I had learned long ago that you “Man Up”, take responsibility for the decisions that you make and learn from the right or wrong of those decisions. That the fault is not in making the wrong decision but in not taking ownership of it.

If you own up to the decisions that you make i.e. Be Accountable, then you are taking steps to learning from the process.

Missed Opportunity

I can see it quite clearly in my head. It was a summer day, I was responding to ad in the newspaper. I had driven about 15 miles from the house see this car that had been advertised.

There she sat in this man’s yard, a little Austin Healey. She showed a little it of age, but overall looked pretty good. Over time the neglectful owners have decided to throw their beer cans into the car.

That was such a sad sight for such a majestic car.

Being a convertible she was missing the ragtop, which lent for well for them tossing in their beer cans. There wasn’t any body damage. There wasn’t any rust. It was only missing one chrome wing center cap for the wheels. Other than that it was in perfect condition, well except for the beer cans.

I looked her over fairly well.

The owner said $125 and she’s yours.

I was just 18. And although the deal was great I passed on it. But since then I kick myself for not taking up that incredible deal. So essentially this is a story of missed opportunity. One of regret, only $125.

Recently I pulled into the parking lot and a beautiful little Austin Healey was parked right next to me. I shared with this old gentleman my story of the Austin Healey that could have been.

This one instance stands out the most to me, one that I wish I could go back and rectify. I could still be driving along the Colorado mountainside in my little Austin Healey.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but missed opportunities happen to all of us everyday. The kind word not said. The apology not made. Take the extra second to rethink the situation so you are not someday in the future thinking about what could have been.

Halloween is the holiday for me that I have the most fun. One of my fond childhood memories is the Halloween Carnivals that my elementary school would have each year. Cakewalks, Hayrides, haunted houses, games, it was so much fun.

Everyone dressed up in various characters from cartoon to super hero to ghoulish. I think the zombie is the easiest to create. It can be as simple as you like or it can be detailed.

And as far as movies go, Zombie movies are usually my favorite. The main character battles against the droves of mindless dead people to survive. And usually he is faced with overcoming impossible odds.

The main character is trying to survive, looking for other survivors, trying to rescue those that he can, simply trying to survive himself and find the cure to help his fellow mankind.

And all the while the zombies are trying eating his brain, or eating him so he will become, as they are, “ZOMBIES”. He must be careful in their presence because they can sense that he is different, not like them.

I relate this to everyday life. As a leader I’m trying to rescue those that I can from their zombie-like life where everyday is the same, “Alarm Clock, Eat, Commute, Time Clock, Work, Time Clock, Eat, Time Clock, Work, Time Clock, Commute, Eat, Sleep”, change name of day and repeat.

The “zombies”, I mean co-workers, family, friends, who do not think like I do, want me to be like them. They cannot understand the books that I read. They sense the change that I have made in life.

They do not understand why I seek the mentorship of other leaders. They want to eat my brain and fill it with the latest gossip, TV show, or mindless trivia that erodes and stifles my creative thoughts. Sometimes they do not realize the harm; hey it’s what everybody else does.
Resist the Zombies, Fight the Zombies, Battle on and find the others, they are alive. We may not be able to save them all but we can try.
